St. Jude Medical Foundation’s mission statement is, “to promote health awareness and advance the state of medical knowledge through education, research and training.” Three main organizations are sponsored by St. Jude Medical Foundation: Minneapolis Heart Institute foundation (MHI), Camp Odayin, and the University of Minnesota Foundation. MHI focuses on research and health of the cardiovascular system. Camp Odayin is a camp for kids with heart disease. The University of Minnesota, with the help of its M.A.G.I.C (Maroon and Gold Impacting the Community) bus, promote living a healthy lifestyle to students and help promote science and math to students.
The four student-athletes that went to promote Exercise Your Heart and Mind included wrestling’s Cody Marcicki, rowing’s Alyssa Trelstad, women’s gymnastic’s Jamie Bullock, and volleyball’s Katherine Harms. The student-athletes were at Bierman Field Athletic Building at 8:30 a.m. and ready to attend two different classes at Roseville Middle School.
The student-athletes led two different science experiments including one on paper chromatography and one on reaction time. In the paper chromatography experiment, students used coffee filters, colored markers, and a solvent (rubbing alcohol) in order to separate the ink into its different substances. The second experiment of reaction time was done in pairs of students. One student held a ruler for their partner, who had their thumb and index finger at the top of the ruler. When the ruler was dropped the partner had to catch it. Where the students’ fingers caught the ruler determined their reaction time.
