Matyas Drafted by Milwaukee Brewers

Minnesota junior closer Scott Matyas (North Prairie, Wis.) was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 1,209th overall pick in the 40th round in the Major League Draft on Wednesday, June 9.
Matyas was drafted for the second time in his career. Last season, he was also drafted by the New York Yankees in the 29th round. He is the third Gopher in as many years to get drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers, joining Eric Decker (38th round in 2008) and Cullen Sexton (37th round in 2009).
In three appearances in the NCAA Regionals, Matyas went 1-0 with a save, pitched 5.2 shutout innings, gave up two hits, walked one and struck out 12. Dating back to the 2009 NCAA Regionals, Matyas went 1-0 with two saves, gave up five hits and struck out 17 batters in 8.2 innings (spanning five appearances). In five postseason appearances in 2010 (spanning the NCAA Regionals and Big Ten Tournament), Matyas went 2-0 with two saves, gave up one run in 9.2 innings and collected 19 strikeouts.
Matyas finished the 2010 season 5-1 with eight saves, a 2.19 ERA and struck out 60 batters in 37.0 innings of work. He finished the season with a 14.59 strikeouts-per-nine innings ratio. Matyas was also named Third-Team All-Big Ten as a reliever, marking the second straight year he collected all-conference honors. He also finished first in the Big Ten in games finished (25), third in appearances at 27 and tied for sixth in saves with eight.
Minnesota also had two of its incoming players drafted, as pitcher Tom Windle out of Osseo High School in Maple Grove, Minn. was drafted by the Chicago White Sox with the 848th overall pick in the 28th round and pitcher D.J. Snelten was taken by the San Diego Padres with the 904th overall pick in the 30th round.
