Minnesota's Samantha Sommers shot a 4-over par 76 in US Women's Amateur qualifying at the Minikahda Country Club in Minneapolis Tuesday to become one of six golfers in the 46-player field to qualify from the site for the 2010 US Women's Amateur Championship.
The senior-to-be carded the third-best round of the day and was just two strokes off the pace set by Casey Danielson of Osceola, Wis.
Fellow Gopher Michelle Edlin shot a 77 and just missed qualifying. She finished the day as one of two alternates in the field.
It was the second major event of the summer for Sommers, who also played in the Women's Amateur Public Links tournament in South Bend, Ind., last month.
The 110th U.S. Women's Amateur Championship will be held at the Charlotte Country Club, August 9-15.
The United States Golf Association accepted a record 1,049 entries for the 2010 US Women's Amateur Championship, which began with sectional qualifying rounds at courses throughout the country July 6.
A field of 156 will participate in 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying Aug. 9-10. The 64 lowest scorers will begin match play on Aug. 11. The 36-hole championship final match will be played Sunday, Aug. 15.
