Edlin Runner-up, Sommers Fourth at State Amateur

University of Minnesota golfers Michele Edlin and Samantha Sommers each collected a top-five finish this week at the 2010 Minnesota Women's State Amateur at Woodhill Country Club in Wayzata, Minn. Their teammate Mary Narzisi finished just out of the top 10 in a tie for 12th. All three players will be seniors on next season's Gopher club.
Edlin held the 36-hole lead by one stroke heading into Wednesday's final round while Sommers began the day, along with eventual champion Olivia Lansing, right behind her teammate. Lansing's victory gave her victories in all of the Minnesota Amateur Championships. This was her second consecutive Minnesota State Amateur title.
Edlin finished with a 54-hole score of 229 (78-73-78) while Sommers carded a 230 (77-75-78). Narzisi turned in a scorecard of 236 (79-80-77).
Edlin, a native of Jackson, Minn., played in all 11 of the Gophers' tournaments as a junior. She posted a stroke average of 77.67, the third-best on the team and also a career-best. She carded a career-best 54-hole score of 220 at the Rio Verde Invitational in February and finished in a tie for third, also a career best. Edlin averaged 77.18 during the spring season which is the eighth-lowest spring average in the history of the program. She will enter her senior season this fall with a career average of 79.70, the 14th-lowest Gopher history.
Sommers, a St. Cloud native and graduate of Apollo High School, appeared in 10 of the team's tournaments this past season. She established a career-low with a 76.09 stroke average, the third-lowest season average in program history. Sommers' led the Gophers at the 2010 Big Ten Championships with a 72-hole score of 294, which was good for fifth place. Her total of 294 is the lowest 72-hole card in program history.
An Omaha, Neb. native, Narzisi also appeared in 10 events as a junior. She finished with a 78.61 stroke average and will head into her senior season with a career stroke average of 78.9, the ninth-lowest average in Gopher history.
The Gophers established many records in 2009-10. Statistically, Minnesota averaged a combined score of 303.8 on the season for a stroke average of 75.95, bettering last season's averages of 311.4 and 77.85, respectively, for the lowest season averages in school history. Prior to last season, the previous low was established by the 1987-88 team with a season average 77.97.
As a team, the Gophers finished in the top 10 in nine of the team's 10 regular season tournaments, five of which were also top-five finishes. Also, the Gophers established five of the program's top 10 54-hole scores this season, including a season-low 893 in the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate Feb. 21-23 and shot a program-best 72-hole score of 1,208 at the 2010 Big Ten Championships. The team also added seven of the lowest 18-hole rounds in the history of the program, including a season-low round of 289 in April at the Indiana Invitational.
