Brewster Awards Scholarships to Former Walk-Ons

Since Tim Brewster was named the head football coach at the University of Minnesota in 2007, he has been developing and improving the Gophers' walk-on program. Since he arrived in Minneapolis, Brewster has awarded more than 15 scholarships to former walk-on players.
That includes the newest pair of Gopher walk-ons to be rewarded with scholarships -- Austin Hahn (Hartford, Wis.) and Aaron Hill (St. Charles, Mo.). Brewster announced Wednesday that Hahn and Hill would be awarded scholarships for the 2010-11 school year.
"Austin Hahn and Aaron Hill absolutely exemplify exactly what we're looking for in student-athletes," Brewster said. "It is with great pleasure that I have awarded these two young men scholarships."
Hahn is a sophomore defensive lineman. He has yet to see game action for the Gophers. Hahn was a two-time all-conference, all-county, all-area and all-region selection for Hartford High School.
"Austin Hahn is a young guy who has worked extremely hard and has put himself in position to help us on the field," Brewster said. "Austin is also a great student. He just does things the way we expect our players to in this program."
Hill red-shirted last season, after coming to Minnesota from Lutheran High School in suburban St. Louis. He was an all-state selection as a senior and earned all-conference honors three times during his prep career.
"Aaron Hill is going to help us at the linebacker position," Brewster said. "Plus, he has a 3.8 grade-point average. The lowest grade he has earned here at the University of Minnesota is a B-plus. That's what it is all about."
Brewster believes a successful walk-on program is an important part of a successful overall college football program. Because of that, he makes sure to recognize those walk-ons he believes have earned a scholarship.
"Every year, we honor our walk-on program by awarding scholarships to deserving players," Brewster said. "Academic excellence and athletic excellence is what we're all about in our walk-on program. If you achieve on and off the field, like these two young men have, you'll be rewarded."
