Series Notes

  • Minnesota played its second game (first game at home) of its 127th season of college football with today's game versus South Dakota.
  • Minnesota and South Dakota met for the 11th time on the gridiron today (all in Minneapolis), but it was the first meeting since a 59-0 Gopher victory on Nov. 8, 1930. Minnesota is now 9-2 all-time against the Coyotes.
  • Prior to today, Minnesota had outscored South Dakota 159-0 (59-0 in 1930; 81-0 in 1916; 19-0 in 1915) in the previous three meetings.
  • Today's meeting between Minnesota and South Dakota is only the second time that both teams scored in the 11 meetings. Minnesota has eight shutout victories against South Dakota, while the Coyotes have blanked the Gophers once.

Game Notes

  • Minnesota is now 4-4 overall and 1-1 in home openers at TCF Bank Stadium.
  • The Gophers are now 93-27-7 all-time in home openers.
  • Minnesota has played eight games at TCF Bank Stadium and has now played two games (their last two) against teams from South Dakota. The Gophers defeated South Dakota State, 16-13, in their final home game last year.
  • Minnesota is now 41-3 against teams with a Dakota in their name. Today's loss joins defeats to South Dakota (1912) and North Dakota State (2007).
  • Minnesota failed to convert fourth-down tries in the first and fourth quarter. Minnesota is now 2 for 4 this year on fourth-down tries after going 5 for 15 in 2009.
  • South Dakota led 7-3 at the end of the first quarter despite having the ball for only 3:29.
  • Minnesota allowed quarterback Dante Warren to pass for 352 yards. Warren was the first quarterback to pass for more than 300 yards against the Gophers since Northwestern's Matt Kafka tossed for 309 yards on Sept. 26, 2009. The last quarterback who threw for more yards than Warren against Minnesota was Illinois' Juice Williams who had 462 yards on Oct. 11, 2008.
  • Minnesota's 38 points are the most scored in a loss since the Gophers fell 42-39 at Florida Atlantic on Sept. 15, 2007.

Individual Notes

  • Junior running back Duane Bennett rushed for 104 yards today after a 187-yard performance in the first game of the season. His back-to-back performances topping the century mark are the first time a Gopher has accomplished that feat since Amir Pinnix did it in the first two games of 2007. Pinnix rushed for 168 vs. Bowling Green and 126 vs. Miami (Ohio).
  • Junior Troy Stoudermire returned the opening kickoff 41 yards, which matched his longest of the season as he also had a 41-yard kickoff return in a season-opening win at Middle Tennessee State.
  • With four kickoff returns today, Stoudermire now has 92 career kickoff returns, which is one shy of Melvin Anderson's (1983-86) career record of 93.
  • Senior Eric Ellestad converted a 27-yard field goal to cap the Gophers' opening drive. It was the second straight game Minnesota scored on the opening drive. Ellestad was 1 for 2 on the day and is now 2 for 5 on field goals this season and 15 for 22 in his career.
  • Senior quarterback Adam Weber tossed a 49-yard touchdown pass to Troy Stoudermire in the second quarter. It was Stoudermire's third career (all receiving) touchdown and first at home. It was Weber's first passing touchdown of the season.
  • Weber added a 16-yeard touchdown pass to sophomore MarQueis Gray in the third quarter. It was Gray's second career touchdown reception.
  • Gray's nine catches for 91 yards today both mark career highs.
  • The 49-yard touchdown pass was Weber's sixth career touchdown pass of 45 or more yards and his ninth of 30 or more yards.
  • Sophomore Michael Carter recorded his first career interception on a Dante Warren pass in the second quarter.
  • Junior Jewhan Edwards recorded his first career sack in the third quarter when he tossed quarterback Dante Warren for an eight-yard loss.
  • Weber added a 26-yard touchdown pass to junior Da'Jon Mcknight with 4:52 left in the third period. It was McKnight's second career touchdown and first since Sept. 27, 2008, at Ohio State.
  • Weber has thrown three or more touchdowns in a game eight times in his career.
  • With three touchdowns on the day, Weber tied both Bryan Cupito (2003-06) and Asad Abdul-Khaliq (2000-03) for the school record of career passing touchdowns with 55.
  • Sophomore Mike Rallis notched his second career interception and second of the year on a fourth-period Dante Warren pass. Three plays later junior running back Duane Bennett scored the 12th touchdown of his career and his first since he scored three times (one rushing, two receiving) in a 42-34 win against Michigan State on Oct. 31, 2009. Rallis and Keanon Cooper led the Gophers with nine tackles (Rallis led team with seven against Middle Tennessee State) on the afternoon. Rallis' nine tackles set a career high.
  • Bennett added his second touchdown of the day and 13th of his career with 3:21 left in the game. Bennett finished the game with 104 yards on 18 carries. It was his third career 100-yard rushing game.
