Gophers Finish Seventh at Cougar Classic

The women's golf team opened their season on the right foot this weekend, finishing the first round of the Cougar Classic in Charlestown, S.C in second place with an overall team score of 280 (+1). Four Gophers recorded rounds in the top 20 of the field, including Michele Edlin, Mary Narzisi, and Jackie Shepherd, each of whom shot an even-par 72. Teresa Puga finished one off their pace and four shots off the lead with a one-over par 73.
Minnesota finished the round four strokes behind leader North Carolina, which finished the opening round of play at 285 (-3).
Starting the day in second place position, the Gophers concluded the second round of play with a score of 296 (+6) which moved them into fifth position in the 19 team classic. Lead by Shepherd and Puga who each recorded one over-par 73's, the Gophers continued their steady play in the first event of the season.
Having failed to place any golfers in the top 20 lowest scores for the day, Minnesota finished the final round of the Cougar Classic at +28, earning them seventh place in the 19 team tournament.
Puga was the lowest scorer for the Gophers, ending the week tied for 21st place with a score of +5.
Shepard finished the classic tied for 29th place and Narzisi came in a tie for 53rd in the standings. Edlin and Samantha Sommers ended in ties for 63rd and 74th position respectively, while alternate Tori Stock concluded in 107th place.
North Carolina maintained its 36 hole lead to win the Cougar Classic with a 54 hole score of 860 (-4) to defeat second place Mississippi (868) by eight strokes. Oklahoma (872) captured third place by one stroke over South Carolina (873). Florida finished in fifth place with a three-round score of 875.
Minnesota will next travel to Vail, Colo. on Sept. 28 to take part in the GolfWeek Conference Challenge.
