Minnesota Defeats San Diego State

The 12th-ranked Minnesota volleyball team (10-1) won its fifth straight match, as it defeated San Diego State (5-6) in three sets by scores of 25-12, 25-20, 25-13 at Peterson Gym in San Diego on Saturday, Sept. 18.

With the win, the Gophers are now 5-0 in away matches and 2-0 in true road matches this year. Minnesota will face No. 23 San Diego at the Jenny Craig Pavilion tonight at 9 p.m. (CT) for the USD/San Diego State Invitational Tournament title. The Toreros defeated San Diego State in four sets on Sept. 17 and won in three over UC Santa Barbara today to move to 2-0 in the tournament. Minnesota was led by Ashley Wittman (Shakopee, Minn.) who hit .471 (10-217), had 10 kills and six digs. Tabi Love also had nine kills, five digs, three blocks and two service aces. Ariana Filho (Monument, Colo.) hit .615 (8-0-13) with eight kills, while Tori Dixon (Burnsville, Minn.) had a match-high five blocks and five kills.

Katherine Harms (Albertville, Minn.) also had six kills and two blocks, while Jessica Granquist (Blaine, Minn.) had a team-high nine digs. Mia Tabberson (Muncie, Ind.) finished with 25 assists in the match.

The Gophers hit a season-high .459 (41-7-74) for the match, and tied a season-low with seven errors. Minnesota has only committed 15 errors in 147 swings in two matches in the USD/San Diego State Tournament.

Minnesota got out of the gates quickly hitting .400 (11-3-20) in the first set, while limiting San Diego State to a -.069 (8-10-29). In the second set, the Gopher fell behind 10-7 but went on a 9-2 run and took a 16-12 lead when Tabberson and Dixon combined on a block. San Diego State cut the lead to 20-18, but the Golden Gophers scored three of the next four points to make it 23-19 on a Granquist service ace. With the score at 23-20, Dixon delivered consecutive kills to close out the second set.

The Gophers exploded offensive in the third set, as they hit .593 (18-2-27) and limited the Aztecs to a .161 (10-5-31) hitting percentage.

Minnesota outdug San Diego State 28 to 24 in the marking. The Gophers have had more digs than their opposition in all 11 matches this year. Minnesota also outblocked the Aztecs 7.0-to-4.5 marking the ninth time in 11 matches its has had more blocks than the opposing team.

San Diego State was led by Andrea Hannasch who had nine kills on the match, while Lauren Salisbury had seven kills and three blocks. Aztec libero Kristi Jackels also had a match-high 13 digs.
