Minnesota Defeats UC Santa Barbara

The 12th-ranked Minnesota volleyball team (9-1) defeated UC Santa Barbara (5-5) in three sets by scores of 25-12, 25-23, 25-16 at Peterson Gym in San Diego, Calif. on Friday, Sept. 17.
With the win, Minnesota started 9-1 for the fifth time since 2000, matching its starts in 2004, 2005 and 2008. The Gophers also started 10-0 in 2000.
Tabi Love (Dauphin, Manitoba) led the way with 10 kills, five digs, three blocks and two service aces. Katherine Harms (Albertville, Minn.) hit .600 (7-1-10) with five blocks, while Ashley Wittman (Shakopee, Minn.) had seven kills, eight digs and three blocks. Ariana Filho (Monument, Colo.) also tied a career-high seven blocks and had five kills.
Junior libero Jessica Granquist (Blaine, Minn.) had a match-high 11 digs and two assists, while Stephanie Nucci (Gilbert, Ariz.) finished with 28 assists, eight digs, two service aces, two kills and two blocks.
Minnesota overwhelmed UC Santa Barbara in the first set outhitting the Gauchos .450 (12-3-2) to -.154 (6-10-26), while also collecting seven blocks. The Gophers led 16-12, and used a 9-0 run to close out the set. In the second set, Minnesota trailed 23-22 before rattling off the final three points and taking the set on a kill by Filho.
The Golden Gophers outhit UC Santa Barbara .348 (11-3-23) to .074 (9-7-27) in third set en route to a 25-16 victory. Harms paced Minnesota with four kills in the final set.
Minnesota outhit the Gauchos .370 (35-8-73) to .062 (32-26-97), and had only eight errors to 26 for the UC Santa Barbara. The Golden Gophers' 15.0 blocks made a large portion of the Gauchos' errors on the night. Minnesota also outdug the Gauchos 34 to 27 on the night.
UC Santa Barbara was led by Charlene DeHoog who had nine kills and five digs, while Kelly Heenan had a team-high seven digs.
Minnesota will face San Diego State at Peterson Gym on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. (CT), and then head to the Jenny Craig Pavilion to face No. 23 San Diego at 9 p.m. (CT). Both matches can be heard in the Gold Zone and followed through the live blog on gophersports.com.
