Series Notes

  • Minnesota is now 2-1 in its history versus Northern Illinois.
  • Tonight's game was Minnesota's 31st all-time versus an opponent from the Mid-American Conference, with the Gophers having a record of 26-4-1 (.855) in those contests.

Team Notes

  • Minnesota scored on its opening drive of the game, and has scored on its first possession in three of four games this season.
  • Northern Illinois is the first Mid-American Conference opponent to visit TCF Bank Stadium. Fellow MAC members Miami University (Sept. 17, 2011) and Western Michigan (Sept. 15, 2012) are set to play here in the next two years.
  • Minnesota falls to 4-6 at TCF Bank Stadium.
  • The Gophers are 6-4 over their past ten games when scoring first.
  • Minnesota owns a record of 13-3 (.813) during its final regular season non-conference game of the past 16 seasons.
  • The Gophers are now 99-64-9 all-time against teams from the state of Illinois.
  • NIU was the third of nine 2009 Bowl participants the Gophers will face this season.
  • Minnesota had a punt blocked right before the half, marking the first time the Gophers have had one blocked since Kansas accomplished the feat during the 2008 Insight Bowl.

Individual Notes

  • Senior Ryan Collado returned his first career kickoff in the first quarter. His second kick return covered 57 yards, the longest for the Gophers this season.
  • Senior quarterback Adam Weber threw for 373 yards, giving him 9,243 for his career. Weber is just the ninth Big Ten quarterback to throw for more than 9,000 yards in his career.
  • Weber moved up the Big Ten's career completions list, finishing with 31 tonight to give him 781 for his career. He moved past Michigan's John Navarre (765 during 2000-03) and Purdue's Mark Herrmann (772 during 1977-80) into eighth place. Weber stands just one shy of Iowa's Chuck Long (782 during 1981-85).
  • Sophomore MarQueis Gray finished with eight catches for a career-high 117 yards and a TD.
  • Weber's 20-yard TD pass to junior Da'Jon McKnight in the second quarter and his 29-yarder to Gray in the final stanza give him 59 for his career.
  • Senior Kyle Theret led the Minnesota defense with eight tackles (six solo), including one tackle for loss.
  • Sophomore wide receiver Bryant Allen established new career highs for receptions (three) and receiving yards (37). Allen made his first career start for the Gophers tonight.
  • Junior defensive back Christyn Lewis forced an NIU fumble on a kickoff return in the second quarter, and then recovered the fumble, both career firsts for the junior college transfer. The turnover led to a field goal.
  • Senior kicker Eric Ellestad made three field goals in a game for the third time in his career, including a career-long 42-yarder. He also made three FGs in wins versus Syracuse and South Dakota State in 2009.
  • Junior David Schwerman made his first career punt for the Gophers.
