Two Gopher long jumpers, Addison Demer and Sam Kettenhofen, landed career bests to highlight the first day of the Minnesota-hosted Jack Johnson Classic at the University Fieldhouse. Demer finished second in the event with a leap of 23 feet, 1 3/4 inches, while Kettenhofen bettered 23-feet for the first time in his Gopher career with a jump of 23-0 3/4 to place fourth.

After just two events scored, Minnesota is tied with South Florida and South Dakota State with 29 points.

The only other final event of the first day was the 200-meter dash. The top Gopher finisher was Cameron Boy in seventh place with a time of 22.53 seconds.

Redshirt freshman Kenny Schofield is in fourth place after the first four events of the heptathlon. Schofield started the day with the fifth-best time in the field in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.43 seconds. He was third in the field in both the next two events, landing a jump of 21-6 3/4 in the long jump and a throw of 40-7 1/2 in the shot put. Schofield cleared 5-10 in the high jump to end the first day of his first collegiate heptathlon completion.

Competition continues on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
