Slechta Named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week

Kayla Slechta was named the Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week for her performance against Air Force last weekend. Slechta helped lead Minnesota to its best team score since the 2009 season (195.575), and led her team to season-high scores in all three events she competed in.
Slechta turned in three top-two performances to lead No. 18 Minnesota past Air Force on Saturday and earn her first Big Ten weekly award. Slechta posted a 9.850 on the vault to tie for first place and tied for second in the floor exercise (9.850) and on the uneven bars (9.800). The vault title was her third in four meets this season, while the floor and bars scores marked personal highs.
Slechta shares the honor with Ohio State’s Melanie Shaffer.
This is the second Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor for Minnesota this season, after Dusti Russell won the award on Jan. 17.
