The University of Minnesota women's cross country took care of business on Saturday morning at the South Dakota State Invitational. Minnesota was in total control all morning, as they won the overall team title with 18 team points. The course ran at 5-kilometers.
Once again senior All-American Stephanie Price did some good damage and picked up her second win of 2011. Price cleared the course in fashion with a time of 17:19.1. Her partner-in- crime Missa Varpness came in second place, with a time of 17:32.5
Redshirt Freshman Molly Kayfes had a time of 17:36.3, which was good for fourth place. Sophomores Laura Docherty (17:44.9), Ashlie Decker (17:48.0) and Katie Moraczewski (17:48.6) came in and fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh. Sophomore Cassy Opitz rounded out the top ten with a tenth place (17:55.8) finish for Minnesota.
Head Coach Gary Wilson was very proud of his squad after today's race.
"We were very pleased with our 28 second split between our first five runners," Wilson said. "I thought we ran a very smart team race. We were patient early and the moved as a pack."
Minnesota will have the next week off, before heading to Madison, Wis., for the Wisconsin Adidas Invitational, next Friday Oct 14. Another portion of the squad will compete on Saturday Oct. 15, at the Tori Neubauer Invitational.
