The Big Ten Conference announced Monday afternoon that University of Minnesota women's soccer player Becca Roberts has been tagged as the Co-DefFreshman of the Week for her efforts in the Golden Gophers' lone match of the week, which was a 2-1 road victory over Iowa.
The Lino Lakes, Minn. native capped off the Maroon and Gold's surge for a second half comeback as she struck home the game-winning goal in the 69th minute of play.
The score was Roberts' second of the season and pushed her individual point total to five (two goals, one assist). She has tallied a total of six shots with four of them being on goal.
Becca is a 2010 graduate from Centennial High School where she was a two-time all-state honoree and led the Cougars to three conference titles.
The weekly honor is Minnesota's second of the season with fellow freshman Taylor Uhl garnering the same accolade on August 22.
The Gopher freshman shares this week's Big Ten award with Wisconsin freshman Cara Walls who tallied a game-winning goal against Nebraska on Saturday.
Roberts and the Golden Gophers return to action Friday night at 7 p.m. as they head to face Illinois (9-4-1, 3-2-1 Big Ten) for their final regular season road swing, which will end with a Sunday afternoon match at Northwestern (2-11-0, 1-5-0 Big Ten).
