The Minnesota women's swimming and diving team will be back in action Saturday as it takes on non-conference foe Iowa State in its first road meet of the season. Events are set to get underway at 1 p.m. CDT at Beyer Pool.
After defeating Michigan last weekend in their season-opene the Gophers are anticipating an exciting meet against the Cyclones, who are also 1-0 on the year after posting top finishes in 13 of 16 events against Northern Iowa last weekend.
Minnesota looks to once again start strong like it did on the opening night of competition against Michigan. The squad took a commanding, 123-63, lead over the Wolverines by winning seven of nine swimming events and also taking first in 1-meter diving. The Golden Gophers closed out the meet with five wins Saturday afternoon to defeat Michigan, 200-150.
Minnesota sophomores Tess Behrens and Maggie Keefer swept the Big Ten weekly swimming and diving awards Tuesday for their performances against the Wolverines, as Behrens was named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week and Keefer was named the Big Ten Diver of the Week. Both sophomores will be a key component to the Gophers success against the Cyclones this weekend.
Behrens set a meet record in the 100 backstroke (54.02) and also as a part of the 200 medley relay (1:42.42) against Michigan, while Tori Simenec and Ashley Steenvoorden also set meets records in the 200 freestyle (1:48.83) and 500 freestyle (4:49.25), respectively.
Minnesota divers will also see good competition this weekend after Iowa State's divers took first vs. Northern Iowa in its season-opening event.
