Nebraska Notes at Minnesota
The Minnesota Golden Gophers are back home Saturday for a Big Ten Conference and Homecoming matchup with the Nebraska Cornhuskers Saturday. The game is scheduled for a 2:36 p.m. CT kickoff from TCF Bank Stadium.
Minnesota is coming off a bye week and a 45-17 loss to Purdue in their last outing. The Gophers are now 1-5 overall and 0-2 in Big Ten play. The Gophers will be looking to break a 14-game losing streak to the Huskers. Nebraska enters Saturday's contest with a 5-1 overall record and a 1-1 Big Ten mark. The Huskers were also off last week. Nebraska's last outing was a 34-27 victory over Ohio State, which saw the Huskers set a school record by overcoming a 21-point deficit.
ABC will televise Saturday's game. Carter Blackburn will call the play-by-play action. Former Washington Huskies quarterback Brock Huard will serve as the analyst in the booth.
HUSKER HISTORY
Minnesota is the most-played opponent of Nebraska's new Big Ten brethren. The Gophers and Huskers matched up 51 times in non-conference action, dating back to 1900 when Minnesota won 20-12. The Gophers have had nine- and 10-game winning streaks against Nebraska in their history. However, Nebraska has won the last 14 matchups between the schools.
CLIMBING THE CHARTS
Running back Duane Bennett is just 24 yards away from cracking Minnesota's all-time career top 20 for rushing yardage. He has rushed for 1,737 yards in his career. Twenty-four more yards would tie him with Kent Kitzmann, who ran for 1,761 yards from 1976-78. At his current pace, Bennett would finish his career with 1,987 yards and would rank No. 14 in school history.
SACK SUPERLATIVES
The Gophers collected three sacks at Purdue in their last outing. It was the first multiple-sack game for Minnesota since having the same number at Illinois last season. The Gophers entered the Purdue game with just two sacks in the first five games of the 2011 season. Red-shirt freshman defensive end Ben Perry garnered one of those sacks for the defensive line. The other two were recorded by linebackers Mike Rallis and Gary Tinsley.
TINSLEY = TACKLES
Senior linebacker Gary Tinsley leads the Gopher linebacking corps with 39 total tackles so far this season. He is now No. 2 on the team in total tackles. Tinsley has 150 career tackles to his credit for his Gopher career. Tinsley accounted for one of Minnesota's three sacks in their last outing at Purdue. That gives him 3.5 career sacks and at least one in each of the last three seasons.
