The Gophers completed play today at the Wildcat Invitational in Evanston, Ill. The Northwestern-hosted, three-day event began on Friday and featured participants from Minnesota, Northwestern, Michigan State, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, South Carolina, Western Michigan, Illinois-Chicago, DePaul and Oklahoma.
There were four flights in singles and two in doubles. Seven Gophers made the trip and all of them competed in singles, while six participated in doubles.
The coaches of the teams in the event decided that players would compete in only one match on Sunday so there were no champions in any of the singles flights.
Junior Doron Muravnik and freshman Aria Lambert both advanced to the semifinals of third flight. Muravnik advanced to the championship match, which was not contested, with a 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (4) win against South Carolina's Dina Guzairova. Muravnik finished the event with a 3-0 record and would have played South Carolina's Adriana Pereira in the final.
Muravnik would have met Pereira because the junior from South Carolina beat Lambert 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in the semifinals. Lambert, who was playing in her second fall tournament, finished with a 2-1 record.
The Gophers next event will be the Oct. 20-24 Wilson/ITA Central Regional Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
