Hours after taking down No. 62-ranked Virginia Tech 7-0, the No. 71 Minnesota women's tennis team won its second match of the day by the same score on Sunday at the Baseline Tennis Center. This time, Gophers topped Carleton, the 21st-ranked team in Division III, to win for the fifth straight time and improve to 8-1 on the year.
All-time, Minnesota is now 12-0 against the Knights, who dropped to 5-1 on the year.
Using different combinations from its earlier match, Minnesota swept the doubles competition for the second time in the same day. The Gophers finished 8-1 in doubles on the weekend after losing the competition the previous three times out.
The match's first point was clinched after duos of Yuliana Umaners and Tereza Brichacova and Aria Lambert and Pauline Gilbert earned 8-0 wins in the No. 2 and 3 flights, respectively. Magdalena Wiecha and Natallia Pintusava won 8-2 at No. 1.
Lambert, who was the last player to finish against the Hokies, blanked Felicity Flesher 6-0, 6-0 to open singles play. The freshman from Deephaven, Minn. is now 5-1 as a Gopher.
Another freshman gave Minnesota a 2-0 advantage.
Newcomer Brichacova completed a perfect 6-0 weekend in singles and doubled combined by beating Katherine Greenberg 6-0, 6-2.
To secure the win, Doron Muravnik beat Molly Hemes at No. 4 and Wiecha posted a win over Kathryn Schmidt at the top spot. Each player won in straight sets.
The match was Wiecha's first of the season in singles play after she missed the team's first six matches and returned to play in doubles against in Minnesota's last three matches.
Alexa Palen, who played in the third spot, stayed perfect at 8-0 and Gilbert moved to 2-0 with a win at No. 2 to cap the scoring.
The Gophers finished the weekend 3-0, outscoring their opponents 20-1. The team won all but one singles match and all but one doubles match. Both of those defeats came on Friday against Missouri.
Minnesota will play its next five matches on the road, starting next Sunday with its first Big Ten contest of the season against rival Wisconsin. The Gophers next play at home on March 30 against No. 9 Northwestern.
