Gopher Alum Receives MLB Team Awards

The Minnesota Twins announced Gopher Baseball alum Glen Perkins was named the team's pitcher of the year as well as their most improved player of 2011. The awards will be given out at the seventh annual Diamond Awards dinner on Jan. 26, 2012, at Target Field. The event will benefit brain, nerve and muscle disorders research at the University of Minnesota.
In 2011, Perkins, 28, held a 2.48 earned runs average with 65 strikeouts and walking 21 in 61.2 innings pitched. Appearing in 65 games, Perkins gave up just two home runs and added his first two MLB saves. In 2010, Perkins only appeared in 13 MLB games and on the mound for 21.2 pitched with an ERA of 5.82.
As a Golden Gopher, Perkins was an All-American in both of his 2003 and 2004 seasons. Named the 2003 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Perkins was also named the 2004 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and the 2004 Big Ten Most Outstanding Player of the Big Ten Tournament. He finished his career 19-5 with a 2.87 ERA, 13 complete games, two shutouts and 230 strikeouts in 216.1 innings pitched. In Big Ten action, the Stillwater, Minn., native was 15-0 with a 2.09 ERA and 139 strikeouts in 129 innings. Perkins ended up first on the Minnesota career in list in Big Ten strikeouts (139), Big Ten winning percentage (1.000, 15-0), fourth in Big Ten ERA (2.08) and tied for second in Big Ten wins (15). Overall, Perkins ranks fourth in career strikeouts with 230.
