Minnesota received an at-large bid to compete in the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championships, which will be held in Terre Haute, Ind., on Monday, Nov. 21. The Golden Gophers have now earned an NCAA Championships appearance in 14 of their last 16 seasons.
"I'm so happy for our guys and our program," said Golden Gopher head coach Steve Plasencia. "I am very happy for Hassan Mead and for his performance yesterday. I am glad we get another chance to run."
Minnesota finished fourth at this past weekend's NCAA Midwest Championships and was led by Senior All-American Hassan Mead, who won the overall individual title. The Gophers had strong performances at the Roy Griak Invitational and Wisconsin adidas Invitational, which helped with their resume in being selected.
The Big Ten will be represented by five teams at the NCAA Championships: Minnesota, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio State and Wisconsin. Indiana and Wisconsin received automatic bids, while Michigan and Ohio State joined Minnesota in earning the at-large bid.
