The pommel horse is an event that leaves very little room for error.
Minnesota finished tenth in the 2011 team standings for pommel horse. They were led by John Scallon, who finished ranked eighth in the nation as a freshman.
"Last year we had a decent lineup but lost our top guy to an injury," head coach Mike Burns sad. "We've improved our strength on pommel horse by quite a bit this year and are looking forward to some big scores."
The team lost Harris Coleman last season to a season-ending shoulder injury. Coleman was their top performer on the event.
In addition to Coleman's return to the lineup, the Gophers brought in freshman Ellis Mannon. Mannon was the US pommel horse champion in the junior division last year at the USA Gymnastics Visa Championships.
John Scallon should have the number three spot in the lineup. Scallon, a seasoned veteran, filled in admirably last season after Coleman was injured and finished as the team's top scorer on the event.
Sophomore Steffen Beck is likely to secure the fourth spot. The battle for the remaining two spots will be between seniors Russel Dabritz, DJ Repp, and Ross Cameratta.
The pommel horse should be a strong event for the Gophers and definitely one to watch this season. It could bring in some great scores and performances to help lift the team.
