Golden Gopher sophomore Micah Hegerle broke the school record in the weight throw to pace Minnesota at the Snowshoe Open on Friday evening at the University Fieldhouse. Hegerle landed a heave of 71 feet, 3 1/2 inches, currently the best effort in the Big Ten and second nationally in the event this season.

Minnesota used the meet as a final tune-up for next weekend’s Big Ten Championships. The Gophers are the two-time defending indoor team titlists.

“Our performances tonight showed we are ready for Big Tens next week,” said Gopher head coach Steve Plasencia. “We’re ready to go and compete and contend for another title. The guys are excited about it.”

On the track, the Gophers’ top performance of the meet was turned by sophomore Ryan Todhunter, who won the 60-meter high hurdles in a time of 8.00 seconds. The time tied the third-fastest in Gopher history.

Senior Ben Peterson cleared 17-7 3/4 to win the pole vault. The defending Big Ten champion was coming off a career-best vault of 17-9 in his last outing.

All three of the Gophers mentioned set new Snowshoe Open record, but they weren’t the only ones. John Holton won the 400 meters with a time of 49.19 seconds. Trey Davis set a new meet record in winning the shot put with a throw of 57-0 3/4. The Gophers’ 4x400-meter relay of Holton, Cameron Boy, Kevin Bradley and Harun Abda ran to first place and a new Snowshoe mark of 3:13.71.

Other Gophers capturing event titles were Sean King in the 60 meters (6.84), Matt Clauer in the high jump (6-7 1/2), and Oladipo Fagbemi in the triple jump (48-2 3/4).
