Three-Goal First Propels Gophers to Win

Minnesota opened the first period of play with a 3-1 lead. Megan Bozek scored first when she netted her sixth goal of the season at 7:03 in the first. Bozek walked the puck into the right circle and fired a shot at the dot. She placed it in the upper-right corner as Anne Schleper and Sarah Erickson assisted on the play. Minnesota added to the lead when Amanda Kessel scored a highlight-reel goal at 16:07 in the second period. She brought the puck into the zone, fed the puck through the Ashley Holmes' legs and picked it up on the back end. She brought the puck down to the goalmouth, dragged it to the left and used her backhand for her 14th goal of the season. Terra Ramussen scored the Gophers' third goal of the game at 19:07 in the first when she went high in the upper-left corner, short-side, for her second goal of the season. UND cut the Gophers' lead to two when the puck went off a Gopher defenseman's skate and past starting goalie Noora Raty. The goal was last touched by Sara Dagenais at 19:37 for the goal.
Minnesota had 17 shots on goal to UND's five. UND had a shot on goal within the first two minutes, but the Gophers shut down their chances for the next 13 minutes and only five in the period.
UND cut the Gopher lead down to another one when Monique Lamoureux-Kolls scored a five-on-three goal at 7:41 in the second to put the game at 3-2. Only 13 shots on goal were taken by both teams, including eight by UND and five by Minnesota.
Dagenais would then be called for a checking-from-behind when she checked Mira Jalosuo into the backboards at 2:50 in the third. The Gophers took advantage of the time and netted two goals at 5:05 and again at 5:58. Sarah Davis scored first when she placed the puck on the short side between the pad and under her glove for ninth goal of the season. The assists went to Kelly Terry and Kelly Seeler. Minnesota netted another when Kessel scored her second of the game at 5:58 in the third with the assists going to Sarah Erickson and Anne Schleper. After the five-on-three, Jocelyne Lamoureux scored at 8:01 to put the game at 5-3 and the eventual final. UND attempted a comeback, pulling its goalie multiple times. After Minnesota was called with back-to-back penalties at 15:41 and 15:54, UND pulled its goalie to provide a six-on-three attempt, but the Gophers withheld the Sioux to finish the game.
A total of 19 penalties were called in the game, nine for the Gophers and 10 for UND. Minnesota went 3-for-9 with the extra attacker, while UND was 1-for-7. Minnesota outshot North Dakota, 34-19, including 12 to six in the final stanza.
Raty earned her 22nd win and had 16 saves, while Stephanie Ney had her 14th loss of the season with 29 saves.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow night at 7:07 p.m.
