Minnesota Falls to No. 20 Louisville 3-0

The Minnesota baseball team (1-2) dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 20 Louisville (3-0) at Al Lang Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. on Sunday, Feb. 20.
Minnesota was led by Nick O'Shea (Blaine, Minn.) who finished 2-for-4 with a double, while AJ Pettersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) collected the Gophers other hit as he reached base twice and went 1-for-3. Kyle Geason (Eden Prairie, Minn.) also drew two walks in the game.
Austin Lubinsky started and gave up three hits, two earned runs, walked two and struck out four batters. Lubinsky ended up getting the loss in his first start of the season. Minnesota's bullpen combined to pitch 4.2 shutout innings on the day. Against Connecticut, the Gophers' bullpen only yielded one run in four innings. In the final two games, the bullpen gave up only one run in 8.2 innings.
Freshman Tom Windle (Maple Grove, Minn.) pitched three shutout innings in his collegiate debut, as he gave up two hits and struck out a pair of batters. Senior Cullen Sexton (Plover, Wis.) also pitched 1.1 shutout innings, as he gave up one hit, walked one and struck out two. DJ Snelten (Ingleside, Ill.) pitched one third of an inning, as he gave up a hit and picked off the runner at first base to get out of the inning.
Louisville had four pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout, as the Cardinals blanked a Big Ten opponent for a second straight day. Mike Nastold started and gave up one, while walking three and striking out three. Chad Green picked up the win in relief, as he gave up one hit and struck out a batter over three innings of work. Jeff Thompson gave up one hit and struck out a pair of batters in two innings of work. Gabriel Shaw came in to pick up the save, as he gave up two walks and struck out two batters in the ninth to close it out.
The Gophers had several scoring opportunities in the game, including one right out of the gates in the bottom of the first. With one out, Geason drew a walk and stole second. O'Shea delivered a two-out single up the middle, but Geason was thrown out at the plate for the final out of the inning.
Louisville got on the board with a single run in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Cade Stallings delivered a triple to right field and came around to score on a RBI bloop-double by Kyle Grieshaber.
Minnesota had another opportunity in the bottom of the fourth when Matt Puhl (North St. Paul, Minn.) and Kurt Schlangen (Albany, Minn.) reached on back-to-back errors by the Cardinals' shortstop to make it second and third. Louisville reliever Chad Green battled back to strike out Bobby Juan (La Crosse, Wis.) to get out of the inning.
The Cardinals tacked on two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 3-0 lead. Alex Chittenden led off the inning with a walk. With one out, Adam Engel laid down a bunt and moved to second on a throwing error to make it second and third. Ty Young followed with a two-run single to put Louisville up 3-0.
Minnesota had another chance in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, O'Shea doubled to left and moved to third on a ground out by Trip Schultz (Forest Lake, Minn.). Puhl hit a line shot up the middle, but the pitcher Green made a nice reflex play to catch it to end the inning.
In the ninth inning, Puhl drew a one-out walk and Juan eventually got on with a two-out walk to make it first and second. Shaw bounced back to strike out Troy Larson (Maplewood, Minn.) to close out the game.
