The Western Collegiate Hockey Association has announced that sophomore defenseman Megan Bozek was named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week after her three-point performance against North Dakota last weekend. It is Bozek’s first honor of the year and the team’s 11th of the season.
A sophomore from Buffalo Grove, Ill., Bozek contributed to three goals against the host North Dakota. She scored a power-play goal at 7:03 in the first period of last Friday’s (Feb. 18) game to give the Golden Gophers an early 1-0 lead en route to a 5-3 victory that secured a share of second place for Minnesota in the final regular season WCHA standings. In last Saturday’s (Feb. 19) 5-3 setback, she set up a power-play goal at 5:34 of the second period to tie the game at 2-2 and then assisted on a shorthanded goal at 17:55 of the third as the Gophers closed to within one at 4-3. Through 32 games played this season, Bozek has produced 18 points with six goals and 12 assists to rank second among defensemen at Minnesota.
Bozek and the rest of the Golden Gophers host Ohio State for the WCHA First Round Playoffs. In a best-of-three series, game times are 6 p.m., Friday, 5 p.m., Saturday and 4 p.m., Sunday (if needed).
