Minnesota Heads to Wake Forest Tournament

Minnesota will head to Winston Salem, N.C. to compete in the Wake Forest Tournament.

The Gophers will face the Demon Deacons on Friday, Feb. 25 at 5 p.m. (CT), Towson University of Saturday, Feb. 26 at 1 p.m. (CT) and Delaware State on Sunday, Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. (CT). There will be five teams coming to Winston-Salem, as Georgetown and Northwestern will also be in town. Minnesota won’t play either of those two teams.

The Gophers enter the week 1-2 after defeating No. 9 Connecticut (3-2), and losing to No. 23 St. John’s (14-1) and No. 20 Louisville (3-0).

Junior first baseman Nick O’Shea led the Gophers offense last week with multi-hit games in two of his first three contests. O’Shea 2-for-3 against No. 23 St. John’s on Feb. 18 and 2-for-4 against No. 20 Louisville on Feb. 20. He is currently batting .455 (5-for-11).

Minnesota will start sophomore right-hander TJ Oakes to the mound in the first game against Wake Forest on Friday, Feb. 25. Oakes took the loss in the season opener to No. 23 St. John's as he gave up five hits, one earned run, walked three and struck out four in three innings of work.

The Gophers will start senior lefthander Phil Isaksson against Towson University on Saturday, Feb. 26. Isaksson took a no-decision against No. 9 Connecticut as he gave up three hits, one unearned run, walked two and struck out three in his first outing of the season.

Junior righthander Austin Lubinsky will start for Minnesota against Delaware State on Sunday, Feb. 27. Lubinsky took the loss in his first outing, as he pitched 4.1 innings, gave up three hits, two earned runs, walked two and struck out four.

Wake Forest is 1-3 after defeating Western Carolina on Feb. 22 for its first win of the season after getting swept at No. 15 LSU by scores of 9-1, 4-3 and 15-4. Matt Conway leads the team with four RBI while Pat Blair has scored a team-high two runs. Zach White is 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA with seven strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Tim Cooney had Wake Forest’s best start against LSU, going 6.1 innings, as he gave up nine hits, three runs, walked one and struck out three. Wake Forest was picked to sixth in the Atlantic Division of the ACC Conference in the Baseball America Preseason issue.

Towson University is 2-2 after splitting with Gardner-Webb (7-5; 2-11) and The Citadel (7-1; 1-15). The Tigers are led by Chris Wychok who is batting .400 with a home run, four RBI and three runs. Steve Rice and Nick Natoli have also scored three runs this season for Towson. Tyler Bugna gave the Tigers a strong start as he is 1-0 after picking up a victory against The Citadel where he pitched five innings, gave up four hits and one run. Towson was picked ninth in the Colonial Athletic Association in the Baseball America Preseason issue.

Delaware State is 0-3 after losing to Arkansas 10-0, 9-2 and 5-0. Keith Hernandez collected two RBI and two doubles in the first weekend of action, while Ryan Haas was a team-best 3-for-9 last week. Jordan Elliot pitched five innings, gave up three hits, one run, walked four and struck out four. Delaware State was picked to finish fourth in the MEAC in the Baseball America Preseason issue.
