Minnesota Heads on California Trip

Minnesota will head on an 11-day, eight-game California trip from Mar. 10-20.
The Gophers will start off with a three-game neutral-site series against Gonzaga at Sacramento State. Minnesota will face the Bulldogs on Friday, Mar. 11 at 4 p.m. (CT), Saturday, Mar. 12 at 3 p.m. (CT) and Sunday, Mar. 13 at 2 p.m. (CT). The Gophers will have a day off and then face Sacramento State on Tuesday, Mar. 15 at 3 p.m. and Wednesday, Mar. 16 at 3 p.m. (CT). Minnesota will have another day off, before facing Santa Clara on Friday, Mar. 18 at 8 p.m. (CT), Saturday, Mar. 19at 3 p.m. (CT) and Sunday, Mar. 20 at 1 p.m. (CT).
Junior first baseman Nick O'Shea is batting .424 with a home run and nine RBI in nine games this season, and has a hit in eight of nine games this year. Junior shortstop AJ Pettersen has collected a hit in each of the first nine games this season. Pettersen is the only Gopher to have a hit in each of the first nine contests. He enters the week batting .351 with seven runs and three stolen bases. Dating back to last season, Pettersen has a 12-game hitting streak.
Sophomore TJ Oakes will start the first game against Gonzaga's Ryan Carpenter. Oakes is 0-2 with a 4.40 ERA and has 12 strikeouts in 14.1 innings. Senior Phil Isaksson will start against Gonzaga's Tyler Olson in the second game. Isaksson is 1-0 with a 0.54 ERA in his first three starts this season. Isaksson has give up just one earned run in 16.2 innings of work, and is limiting the opposition to a .211 batting average. Junior Austin Lubinsky will start in the third game for the Gophers.
Gonzaga enters the three-game series with Minnesota with a 5-6 overall record. This week, the Bulldogs split a midweek series with Missouri, losing the first game 5-2 and winning the second game 4-1. Last week, Gonzaga swept a three-game series at Pacific by scores of 7-4, 6-5, 4-0.
The Bulldogs started out 0-5, but have gone 5-1 since that point. Gonzaga is led by Maxx Garrett who has a team-high two home runs and seven RBI, and is batting .318. Eric Lane has a team-high eight runs, a team-best 13 hits and is batting .302. Pitching wise, Tyler Olson is 1-1 with a 0.75 ERA and has struck out 12 batters in 12 innings. Ryan Carpenter has a 3.38 ERA, no decisions and 26 strikeouts in 18.2 innings. Cody Martin also is 1-0 with three saves, a 1.26 ERA and has struck out 18 batters in 14.2 innings.
Sacramento State enters the weekend with a 4-9 overall record. The Hornets lost a midweek game to San Francisco 3-2 on Mar. 8. The Hornets also lost two out of three at UC Santa Barbara last week. The Hornets lost the first and third games 4-2 and 10-9, and won the middle game 3-2. Sacramento State is led by Justin Lamb who has a team-high six RBI, while Derrick Chung has a team-best eight runs. Eli Davis is batting .270 with two RBI, two runs and a team-best three stolen bases. Pitching wise, the Hornets are led by Karl Mass who is 1-1 with a 2.00 ERA and .197 opponent batting average in 18.0 innings of work. Tanner Mendonca is 1-1 with a 2.33 ERA and has 11 strikeouts in 19.1 innings. James Chamberlain is 0-1 with a save and a 3.78 ERA, with a 13 strikeouts in 16.2 innings.
Santa Clara enters the weekend with a 6-6 overall record. The Broncos lost 20-5 against California on Mar. 8. Last week, the Broncos defeated San Jose State in two out of three games. Santa Clara lost to San Jose State 4-2 in the first game, but bounced back to win the next two contests by scores of 3-2 and 6-3. The Broncos are led by Kyle DeMerritt who leads the team in runs (10) and RBI (12), and is batting .340. Lucas Herbst is batting .385 with six runs and six RBI, while Matt Ozanne has eight runs, nine RBI and is batting .372. Pitching wise, Cory Hall is 2-1 with a 2.57 ERA and has 12 strikeouts in 21.0 innings. Chris Mendoza is also 1-1 with a 2.93 ERA in three starts and has pitched 15.1 innings.
