Minnesota Defeats Gonzaga 8-1

The Minnesota baseball team (5-5) defeated Gonzaga (5-7) 8-1 on Friday, Mar. 11 at John Smith Field in Sacramento, Calif. to start off an eight-game California trip.
Minnesota was led by junior third baseman Kyle Geason (Eden Prairie, Minn.) who went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI, while sophomore Justin Gominsky (Mahtomedi, Minn.) went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Junior shortstop AJ Pettersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) was also 2-for-4 with a run, while Trip Schultz (Forest Lake, Minn.) went 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Troy Larson (Maplewood, Minn.) reached base twice, and was 1-for-2 with two runs, a stolen base and an RBI. Matt Puhl (North St. Paul, Minn.) also reached base twice, and was 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI. Nick O'Shea (Blaine, Minn.) reached base twice, and was 1-for-3 with a run, while Dan Olinger (Great Falls, Mont.) collected his first career hit when he doubled to lead off the bottom of the eighth. The Gophers had eight different players collect hits for the game.
Sophomore TJ Oakes (Jordan, Minn.) picked up his first win of the season to go 1-2, as he spread out nine hits, gave up one run, one walk and struck out three in 6.1 innings. Freshman Tom Windle (Maple Grove, Minn.) pitched 2.1 shutout innings, gave up two walks and struck out a batter.
Gonzaga starter Ryan Carpenter had his shortest outing of the year, as the Gophers handed him his first loss of the season. Carpenter gave up seven hits, seven runs, walked three and struck out five in four innings of work. Aaron Brooks gave up six hits and one unearned run in 3.1 innings of relief.
The Bulldogs got on the board first with a single run in the top of the second. Cameron Edman led off the top of the second with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an RBI ground out by Royce Bollinger to make it 1-0.
Minnesota answered when it sent nine batters to the plate and scored five runs in the bottom of the third. Kurt Schlangen (Albany, Minn.) led off the inning with a walk, and moved to third on a hit-and-run single by Pettersen. Larson plated Schlangen with an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1. Gominsky brought home Pettersen with an RBI single to put the Gophers up 2-1. Minnesota loaded the bases with two outs for Geason, who came up with a bases-clearing three-run double to put the Gophers up 5-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Minnesota added a pair of runs when Puhl brought home Gominsky with a sacrifice fly and Schultz plated O'Shea with a pinch-hit RBI single to make it 7-1. Gominsky added an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth when he delivered an RBI single that brought home Larson.
Gonzaga was led by Steven Halcomb who reached base three times, and was 2-for-3. Tyler Chism and Billy Moon also had two-hit games, while Bolinger collected the only RBI on the day for the Bulldogs.
Minnesota and Gonzaga will meet in the second game of the series on Saturday, Mar. 12 at 3:05 p.m. The two teams will play the final game of the series on Sunday, Mar. 13 at 2:05 p.m. (CT). Both games can be heard live in the Gold Zone.
