Minnesota Loses to Gonzaga 15-6 in Series Finale

The Minnesota baseball team (5-7) lost the series finale to Gonzaga (7-7) 15-6 at John smith Field at Sacramento, Calif.

Gonzaga entered the top of the third trailing 4-3, before combining to score 12 runs in the third and fourth innings on the way to a nine-run victory.

Sam Ryan (Oakdale, Minn.) went 2-for-2 in the game with a run and two RBI, while Justin Gominsky (Mahtomedi, Minn.) was 2-for-4 with a run and a stolen base. Kyle Geason (Eden Prairie, Minn.) was also 1-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI, while Trip Schultz (Forest Lake, Minn.) and Ryan Abrahamson (Oakdale, Minn.) also went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Nick O'Shea (Blaine, Minn.) also finished 1-for-2 with a double a run and an RBI, while AJ Pettersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) was 1-for-5 with a run. With the hit, Pettersen has now collected a hit in each of the Gophers' 12 games this year, and has a 15-game hitting streak going back to 2010. Minnesota had nine different hitters collect hits on the day.

Minnesota starter Austin Lubinsky (LaCrosse, Wis.) took the loss to fall to 1-3, as he gave up five hits, four earned runs, walked two and struck out two batters in 2.1 innings. DJ Snelten (Ingelside, Ill.) also gave up four hits, five earned runs and walked a batter in one inning of relief.

Billy Soule (Hamel, Minn.) settled things down as he gave up four hits and one unearned run with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings. Alex Tukey (San Diego, Calif.) gave up two hits and struck out a batter in 1.1 scoreless innings. Scott Matyas (North Prairie, Wis.) also pitched one shutout inning and collected a strikeout.

The Gophers touched up Gonzaga starter Billy Moon for six hits and four runs in the first inning. Kenny Smith also gave up two hits and two runs in 1.1 innings of relief. Cody Martin settled things down for the Bulldogs, as he pitched five shutout innings of relief, gave up two hits and struck out eight batters to pick up the win to move to 2-0.

Gonzaga jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on RBI singles by Maxx Garrett and Marco Gonzales. Minnesota answered with a four-run bottom of the inning to take a 4-2 lead. AJ Pettersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch with two outs and came home to score on an RBI double by O'Shea to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 2-1. Geason plated O'Shea with an RBI double to tie the game at 2-2, and came home to score on an RBI single by Ryan that put the Gophers up 3-2. Ryan Abrahamson plated Ryan, who moved up to second on his single, with an RBI double to give Minnesota a two-run lead at 4-2.

The Bulldogs answered with a single run in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Eric Lane that cut the Gopher lead to 4-3. Gonzaga took the lead for good with a five-run top of the third. Gonzales started the scoring with an RBI double that tied the game at 4-4. Cameron Edman made it second and third when he reached on a two-base error on a bunt attempt. With one out, Steven Halcomb reached on a fielder's choice on safety squeeze attempt that plated Gonzales to make it 5-4.

Keegan Acker put the Bulldogs up 6-4 on an infield single that plated Edman. Halcomb came home to score on an RBI ground out by Eric Lane that made it 7-4. With two outs and runners on first and third, Moon got hung up in between first and second. Moon stayed alive long enough for Acker to score to put Gonzaga up 8-4.

Minnesota got RBI singles by Ryan and Schultz in the bottom of the third inning to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 8-6.Gonzaga blew the game open with a seven run top of the fourth to move ahead 15-6. In that inning, The inning was highlighted by RBI singles from Garrett, Royce Bolinger and Acker.

The Bulldogs had six different players register multi-hit games on the afternoon. Garrett finished 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBI, while Acker reached base four times and was 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBI. Lane was also 2-for-5 with a run and three RBI.

Minnesota will be back in action when it faces Sacramento State in a pair of midweek games on Tuesday, Mar. 15 at 4 p.m. (CT) and Wednesday, Mar. 16 at 4 p.m. (CT). Both games can be heard in the Gold Zone.
