Minnesota Faces Santa Clara

Minnesota will finish an 11-day, eight-game California trip from Mar. 10-20 with a three-game series at Santa Clara.

The Gophers will face Santa Clara on Friday, Mar. 18 at 8 p.m. (CT), Saturday, Mar. 19 at 3 p.m. (CT) and Sunday, Mar. 20 at 1 p.m. All three games can be heard in the Gold Zone.

Minnesota enters the series with a 7-7 record after winning 3-1 and 7-5 in 11 innings in a pair of midweek game at Sacramento State. AJ Pettersen enters the weekend with a 17-game hitting streak going back to 2010 and has a hit in each of the 14 games in 2011. Pettersen, who is batting .350 with nine runs and four RBI, extended his hitting streak with the go-ahead two-run single in the 11th in a 7-5 win over Sacramento State on Mar. 17.

Sophomore outfielder Justin Gominsky also has an 11-game hitting streak heading into the series, and is batting .333 with 10 runs, four RBI and five stolen bases. Kyle Geason is also batting .271 with six runs and eight RBI on the season for the Gophers, and is batting .333 with a team-high five RBI during Minnesota's five games on this California trip.

Minnesota will send TJ Oakes to the mound on Friday. Oakes, who picked up his first win of the season in the series opener against Gonzaga, is 1-2 with a 3.43 ERA and has 15 strikeouts in 21.0 innings in four starts. He is slated to face Santa Clara's Brock Simon who is 1-3 with a 7.12 ERA.

The Gophers will have senior Phil Isaksson start on Saturday against the Broncos. Isaksson is 1-1 with a 2.49 ERA with 12 strikeouts in a team-high 21.2 innings this season. He will face Cory Hall who is 2-2 with a 2.89 ERA for Santa Clara.

Austin Lubinsky is slated to start on Sunday against the Broncos. Lubinsky is 1-3 with a 7.79 ERA and has 14 strikeouts in 17.1 innings. He is set to face Chris Mendoza who is 1-2 with a 3.92 ERA.

Senior closer Scott Matyas picked up a win and a save in two appearances against Sacramento State. Matyas is 1-0 with a four saves, a 0.00 ERA and has not given up a hit in 9.1 innings. Matyas has also collected 13 strikeouts this year.

Santa Clara enters the weekend with a 7-9 overall record. The Broncos lost to Utah twice by scores of 5-3 and 7-4, lost to UW-Milwaukee 3-0 and defeated UC Davis 9-8 in their home tournament. Santa Clara is led by Kyle DeMerritt who leads the team in runs (11) and RBI (13), and is batting .274. Zach Looney leads the team batting average at .333, has 11 runs and six RBI. Lucas Herbst also has seven runs, nine RBI and is batting .321.

Pitching wise, Cory Hall is 2-2 with a 2.89 ERA and has 20 strikeouts in 28.0 innings. Chris Mendoza is also 1-2 with a 3.92 ERA in four starts and has pitched 20.2 innings. Powell Fansler is 2-0 with a 2.84 ERA in four appearances (two starts), while J.R. Graham is 1-0 with two saves, a 1.98 ERA and has 19 strikeouts in 13.2 innings. Santa Clara is coached by Mark O’Brien who is 248-264 in his 10th season with the program. The Broncos lead the all-time series 1-0 against Minnesota. Santa Clara defeated the Gophers 6-3 on May 27, 1988 in the NCAA Regionals.
