Minnesota Defeats Sacramento State in Extra Innings

The Minnesota baseball team (7-7) rallied with a single run in the ninth inning and scored two in the 11th, as it rallied to defeat Sacramento State (4-14) 7-5 in 11 innings at John Smith Field in Sacramento, Calif. on Thursday, Mar. 17.

Minnesota entered the top of the ninth trailing 5-4, before scoring the tying run to keep the Gophers alive. JT Canakes (Eden Prairie, Minn.) led off the inning with a single. Troy Larson (Maplewood, Minn.) came in to pinch-run for Canakes and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Puhl (North St. Paul, Minn.). Freshman catcher Matt Halloran (Eden Prairie, Minn.) plated Larson with an RBI single to tie the game.

Prior to tying the game in the ninth, the Gophers had entered the top of the eighth trailing 5-2. In that inning, David Bettenburg (St. Paul, Minn.) delivered a pinch-hit home run to cut the Hornets' lead to 5-3. Following the home run, Justin Gominsky (Mahtomedi, Minn.) tripled to right center field and came home to score on two-out RBI single by Kyle Geason (Eden Prarie, Minn.) to trim the lead to 5-4.

Scott Matyas (North Prairie, Wis.) came in with one out and a runner on second in the bottom of the ninth, and retired the final two batters to force the game to extra innings. Matyas held down Sacramento State going into the top of the 11th inning.

With one out in the top of the 11th, Dan Olinger (Great Falls, Mont.) drew a walk. Larson put down a sacrifice bunt to move Olinger to second base. Ethan Liederman (New York, N.Y.) came in to pinch-run and moved to third after Puhl and Kurt Schlangen (Albany, Minn.) drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. AJ Pettersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) delivered a two-out, two-run single on an 0-2 pitch to plate Liederman and Puhl to give Minnesota a 7-5 lead. Matyas set down the Hornets in order in the bottom of the 11th to give the Gophers the victory.

Matyas picked up the win to move to 1-0, as he pitched 2.2 shutout innings, walked two and struck out four.  DJ Snelten (Ingelside, Ill.) gave the Gophers a strong relief effort as he came into the game in the third inning and pitched four shutout innings. Snelten gave up only one hit and struck out four in the relief effort.

Senior relievers Cullen Sexton (Plover, Wis.) and Luke Rasmussen (Northfield, Minn.) each pitched one shutout inning of relief as well. Redshirt freshman Kyle O'Shea (Blaine, Minn.) made his first career start and gave up three hits, three runs and a walk in two innings of work.

Andrew Galvin took the loss in relief for Sacramento State as he gave up one hit, two runs and walked three in one inning of relief. Hornet closer Brandon Sandoval entered game in the eighth with Sacramento State up 5-2, and ended up allowing five hits and three runs in three innings. He also struck out two batters. Shea Lukes made the start for the Hornets and gave up three hits, one run and collected two strikeouts in 4.2 innings.

Canakes reached base three times, and was 2-for-3 with a triple and a run. Geason finished the game 2-for-5 with a run and
RBI, while Halloran was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Puhl had two sacrifice flies, a sacrifice bunt and was 1-for-1 with a run and two RBI.

Bettenburg was 1-for-3 with the first Gopher pinch-hit home run since 2009, and Gominsky reached base twice and was 1-for-4 with a run and a triple. Pettersen also finished 1-for-6 with two RBI on the game. Pettersen has now hit in every game this year, and extended his hitting streak to 17 going back to 2010. Gominsky also moved his hitting streak to 11 games.

Sacramento State got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the first to go up 3-0. Kirby Young had a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0, and Blake Miller delivered a two-run single to push the lead to 3-0.

Minnesota got sacrifice flies by Puhl in the fifth and seventh to cut the Sacramento State lead to 3-2.

The Hornets got two runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 5-2 on a pinch-hit home run by Jake Chilton and a sacrifice fly by Derek Chung.

Sacramento State was led by Miller who was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Chilton was 2-for-3 with a home run. David Del Grande was also 2-for-6 with two runs.

Minnesota will be back in action when it travels to Santa Clara to face the Broncos on Friday, Mar. 18 at 8 p.m. (CT), Saturday, Mar. 19 at 3 p.m. (CT) and Sunday, Mar. 20 at 1 p.m. (CT).
