Hammer Throwers Top Gophers in First Outdoor Meet

The Minnesota men’s track & field team kicked off its outdoor season this weekend by competing in the Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., The top event for the Gophers was the hammer throw, an event only contested outdoors. Micah Hegerle and Mege Quentin teamed to become the first Gophers to throw the hammer over 200 feet in the same meet.
Defending Big Ten champion Hegerle placed second overall and as the top collegian with a personal-best throw of 212 feet, 9 inches. The mark improves his number-two throw in Gopher history. It took just one meet for Mege to join the top Minnesota throwers list. Mege placed fifth overall with a throw of 202-1, the fourth-best effort in Gopher history.
Aaron Studt began his final outdoor season with a victory in the shot put. Studt landed a throw of 57-1 1/2. Trey Davis finished second with a toss of 54-9 1/2, then added a third-place showing in the discus with a throw of 169-0.
Minnesota also scored a title in the pole vault. Coming off his NCAA runner-up performance indoors, Ben Peterson tied for the title in his first outdoor meet with a height of 16-9 1/2.
John Holton led the Gophers on the track. Holton placed second in the 400 meters with a time of 47.47 seconds, then led off the runner-up 4x400-meter relay that clocked a time of 3:13.44. Also running the relay were Oladipo Fagbemi, Jacob Capek and Mike Shelendich.
Other third-place finishers for the Gophers were Mike Torchia in the 1,500 meters (3:54.01) and Matt Clauer in the high jump (6-6 3/4).
