Gophers Volunteer for “Reading Champions”

In conjunction with “I Love to Read Month” as well as supporting the “Reading Champions” outreach efforts, 19 University of Minnesota student athletes visited five schools over the past two months. Golden Gopher student-athletes volunteered to read to classrooms of kids ranging from first to fifth graders.

 Minnesota visited the following schools: World Cultures Magnet School (Feb. 8), Weaver Lake Elementary (Feb. 11), Newport Elementary (Feb. 25), Friendship Academy of Fine Arts (March 16) and Centennial  Elementary (March 25) over the course of two months. The U of M student-athlete volunteers told the kids why they love to read and why it’s so important to continue in their reading classes. They also interacted with them after the reading class and signed autographs.
Volunteering that the events were Duane Bennett (football), Leah Cotton (women’s basketball), Caitlyn Dongoske (women’s track and field), Sarah Erickson (women’s hockey), Nick Hutton (men’s track and field), Nathan Jobe (men’s swimming and diving), Sarah Krueger (rowing), Danielle Lebreck (women’s track and field), Teresa Logemann (rowing), Nicole Mastey (women’s basketball), Tracy Merth (rowing), Mallory Mitchell (softball), Melissa Nelson (women’s swimming and diving), Brian Peterson (wrestling), Kathryn Ritter (women’s track and field), Naomi Tabberson (volleyball), Kayla Thom (rowing), Jackie Voigt (women’s basketball) and Kelly Wilson (track and field).
