Brandon Hatanaka, of Loveland, Colo., has signed a National Letter of Intent to swim at the University of Minnesota, Golden Gopher coaches Kelly Kremer, Dennis Dale and Bill Tramel announced. Hatanaka will join the Gophers in the 2011-12 season.
A senior at Loveland High School, Hatanaka is coached by Tony Helfrich. Hatanaka captured Colorado 5A all-state honors in four events at the 2010 State Championships. In addition to swimming to honors in the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay, Hatanaka finished fourth in the 200 individual medley (1:55.99) and sixth in the 100 butterfly (52.57). He also finished fourth in the 200 IM as a sophomore in 2009.
Hatanaka owns top times of 1:50.88 in the 200 fly, 1:51.84 in the 200 IM and 3:57.87 in the 400 IM.
“We are very excited to sign another great swimmer from the state of Colorado,” said Bill Tramel, the Gophers’ associate head coach for men’s and women's swimming. “Brandon will make an immediate impact and I'm excited to coach him next year. He should be one of the leaders as a freshman in our IM group.”
