Minnesota Defeats Indiana 5-2 to Claim Sweep

The Minnesota baseball team (14-15, 6-6) finished a three-game sweep over Indiana (25-15, 6-6) with a 5-2 win over the Hoosiers in the series finale at Sembower Field in Bloomington, Ind. on Sunday, Apr. 24. Minnesota's sweep over the Hoosiers was the first road sweep in the conference in 2011 season.
Minnesota starter Austin Lubinsky (La Crosse, Wis.) shut out Indiana for the first six innings, and ended up picking up a win to move to 3-3 as he gave up five hits, two runs, walked three and struck out four. Sophomore Billy Soule (Hamel, Minn.) pitched two shutout innings, giving up two hits, one walk and one strikeout in relief. Scott Matyas (North Prairie, Wis.) came on to retire the final three batters in ninth, as he picked up his sixth save of the season.
The top of the Gopher lineup went 6-for-14 with three runs and three RBI. AJ Pettersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) went 2-for-5 with a triple, a run and an RBI. Pettersen has now collected a hit in 28 of 29 games this year and has reached in 42 straight contests going back to 2010. Troy Larson (Maplewood, Minn.) also went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI, while Justin Gominsky (Mahtomedi, Minn.) reached base three times, and was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Kurt Schlangen (Albany, Minn.) reached base twice, and went 1-for-2 with two runs, while Kyle Geason (Eden Prairie, Minn.) finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Indiana starter Joey DeNato took the loss to fall to 5-2, as he gave up eight hits, five runs, walked three and struck out three in seven innings of work. Matt Dearden came on to pitch two shutout innings for the Hoosiers.
Minnesota got on the board first with a single run in bizarre fashion in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Gominsky drew a walk. with Gominsky on base, DeNato threw a pitch that O'Shea swung at but got away from the catcher. Gominsky took second on a wild pitch, and tried to go for third. As Gominsky arrived at third the ball sailed into left field allowing him to score the first run of the game.
Lubinsky and DeNato kept it at 1-0 until the top of the sixth when the Gophers pushed three runs across the plate to move ahead 4-0. Schlangen got things started when he drew a one-out walk. Pettersen plated Schlangen with a one-out RBI triple to make it 2-0, and came home to score on an infield RBI single by Larson to give the Gophers a three-run lead. With two outs, Nick O'Shea (Blaine, Minn.) singled up the middle to make it first and third, and Geason followed with an RBI single to make it 4-0.
The Gophers added a single run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Gominsky that plated Schlangen to push the lead out to 5-0.
Indiana got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double by Casey Smith and an RBI ground out by Dustin DeMuth to make it 5-2, but Soule and Matyas combined to shut the door as they pitched three shutout innings to finish the game out.
The Hoosiers were led by Michael Basil who reached base twice and was 1-for-3 with a run, while Smith was 1-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI. Matt Serfling was also 2-for-4 on the afternoon.
Minnesota will be back in action when it faces South Dakota State at Siebert Field on Tuesday, Apr. 26 at 3:05 p.m. The Gophers will then travel to Brookings, S.D. to face the Jackrabbits on Wednesday, Apr. 27 at 3:05 p.m. Minnesota will then host Iowa in a three-game series at Target Field on Friday, Apr. 29 at 3:05 p.m., Saturday, Apr. 30 at 1:05 p.m. and Sunday, May 1 at 1:05 p.m. All five games can be heard live in the Gold Zone.
