Gophers Finish Sixth at Big Ten Championship

The University of Minnesota women's golf team posted its lowest round of the weekend with a 299 over its final 18 holes to finish in sixth place at the Big Ten Championship. The Gophers entered the day in seventh and moved up one spot to conclude the event with a 72-hole total of 1216 at the 11 team event.

Mary Narzisi was the lowest Minnesota golfer for the weekend, earning a tie for 14th after a final round 75 for a 36-hole total of 302.

Teresa Puga carded a 76 on the last day for a two-day score of 304 and a tie for 21st in position. Samantha Sommers ended one behind Puga in 23rd following a 75.

Michele Edlin placed 32nd following a second straight 77 (310), while Banchalee Theinthong fired the low round of the day for Minnesota with an even par 72 to finish tied for 43rd (313). Jackie Shepherd tied for 48th,  finishing with a 78 and a weekend score of 316.

Michigan State held off previous champion Purdue with a final round 289 and a weekend total of 1180. Northwestern (1187) took home third place, with Wisconsin (1195) and Ohio State (1195) completing the top five.

Numa Gulyanamitta of Purdue used a one-under-par  71 take home medalist honors, besting Lauren Weaver of Northwestern by two strokes.

The Gophers will now look forward to NCAA Regional play from May 5-7.
