Gophers Begin Drake Relays Competition

The Minnesota men’s track & field team kicked off competition at the Drake Relays with three Golden Gophers running on Thursday. Mike Shelendich ran a time of 1 minute: 54.39 seconds to finish fifth in the unseeded 800-meter run. Joe McFarland placed 10th in the race with a time of 1:56.01.

Kevin Lachowitzer added a ninth-place showing in the 5,000 meters running a time of 14:19.15.

Minnesota also competed at the Macalester Twilight in St. Paul on Thursday evening with Gophers coming away with five event titles. Matt Volz won the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.93, while Sean Duling added the second title on the track in the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 14.80 seconds.

The Gophers won three field event crowns. Brad Parent won the high jump with a height of 6-5 and Adam Isakson cleared 15-7 1/4 to win the pole vault. Micah Hegerle captured first in the discus with a throw of 175-3.
