Price Fifth in Big Ten 10K

The Minnesota women’s track and field team struggled in day one of the Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Iowa City, Iowa, on Friday. The Golden Gophers look to reverse their fortunes after scoring jump nine points in three events to stand in seventh place after the first day of the three-day Championships.
Samantha Sonnenberg turned in the highest finish for the Gophers placing fourth in the pole vault with a height of 12 feet, 11 1/2 inches. Sonnenberg was the top seed coming into the meet. Becca Pilkerton finished ninth with a height of 12-4.
Stephanie Price added a fifth-place showing in the 10,000-meter run. Price, running making her Big Ten 10K debut, clocked a time of 35 minutes, 14.98 seconds. Laura Docherty placed 15th in a time of 36.16.18, while Annie Talajkowski finished 19th in 37:14.32 and Rachel Drake 21st in 37:40.10.
The Gophers were hoping for a better outcome in the hammer where defending Big Ten champion DeAnne Hahn failed to make finals. Her top throw on the day was 167-8. Amy Kubat fouled all three of her attempts in the preliminary round.
Minnesota’s first event on Saturday is the prelims of the 4x100-meter relay at 2:10 p.m.
