Gophers Climbing Leaderboard at NCAA Championship

After posting a score of 294, an improvement of 11 shots from yesterday's opening round 305, the Gopher women's golf team is climbing the leaderboard at the NCAA Championships. Minnesota is now in a tie for 13th after entering the round tied for 18th at the 24-team event in Bryan, Texas. Only North Carolina carded a better score during Thursday's second round with a 293 as Minnesota sits 11 strokes back of fifth place LSU with 36-holes remaining.
Teresa Puga and Samantha Sommers fired even par 72's to move up into ties for 40th overall, leading the Gophers on day two of the 72-hole tournament. The pair started the day in 75th after rounds of 77 over their first 18 holes of play. Puga birdied four holes on her opening nine for a two-under 34 but struggled on the back nine to a 38. Sommer's day was the exact opposite, as she followed a 38 with two birdies and no bogeys for a two-under 34.
Michele Edlin continues to pace the Gophers on the leaderboard. The Jackson, Minn. native carded a 75 on Thursday and sits tied for 24th with 36 holes remaining following a 72 in the opening round.
Mary Narzisi responded from a first round 79 with a 75 to claim a tie for 90th with two rounds left, while Jackie Shepherd improved four shots from yesterday's 84 with an 80 to put herself tied for 123rd overall. Narzisi fired a 34 on the front nine, but stumbled on the back to a 41. Meanwhile, Shepherd's one-over 37 on the front was tempered by a 43 on the back nine.
Defending champion Purdue is in position to defend its title in first place, while first round leader UCLA is second and host Texas A&M third.
The third round will begin Friday at 7:00 a.m. CT once again. Live scoring will continue to be available at www.ncca.com. Also, a live webcast of holes 16-18 will begin around 2:00 p.m.
