Three Golden Gopher women’s track athletes – Nikki Swenson, Nikki Tzanakis and Todea-Kay Wills - were accorded All-America Second Team honors by the U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday.  The trio earned national accolades for their performance at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships last week in Des Moines, Iowa.

Athletes that scored at the NCAA meet are named to the USTFCCCA All-America First Team, while athletes that finished ninth through 16th are USTFCCCA All-America Second Team honorees. Athletes that participated in the NCAA Championships, but did not finish among the top 16 are recognized as Honorable Mention All-Americans.

Tzanakis was the highest placing Gopher, finishing 14th in the discus. Swenson finished 16th in the 1,500-meter run, while Willis was 16th in the long jump.

Gophers named Honorable Mention All-Americans were Samantha Sonnenberg in the pole vault and the 4x100-meter relay of Willis, Nyoka Giles, Chimerem Okoroji and Alena Brooks.

This is the first year the USTFCCCA has awarded the All-America honors in this fashion.
