Former Gopher standouts and recent Major League Baseball draft picks Scott Matyas and Justin Gominsky have each made their professional baseball debuts in the past week.

A 27th-round selection of the Detroit Tigers, Matyas appeared in his first professional game last night for the Gulf Coast League Tigers, striking out two batters in a perfect eighth inning of an 8-2 loss to the GCL Phillies.

Gominsky, an 11th-round pick of the Houston Astros, has started four of five games in center field for the Tri-City ValleyCats of the New York-Penn League. He made his professional debut by going 0-for-3 with a run scored in a 9-3 loss to the Vermont Lake Monsters on June 17, but collected his first professional hit one night later to help Tri-City win, 10-0.

In his past two games, both against the Connecticut Tigers, Gominsky has combined to go 3-for-7 with four runs batted in, four walks, and a run scored. For the season, he's off to a .286 (4-for-14) start with hits in three of four games.

Two other former Gophers have reported to their assigned affiliates, but have yet to make their debuts. Nick O'Shea, a 24th-round pick of the Cincinnati Reds, has yet to appear in two games with the Billings Mustangs of the Pioneer League, while A.J. Pettersen (listed as Adam Pettersen) hasn't yet played for the Elizabethton Twins of the Appalachian League. Pettersen was a 25th-round selection of the Minnesota Twins.
