SERIES NOTES
- Minnesota opened its 128th home season of college football today vs. New Mexico State
- It was the first-ever meeting on gridiron between the Gophers and Aggies.
- Today's game was just the fourth contest against a current team from the Western Athletic Conference and dropped Minnesota to 1-3 against the league's current membership (Hawai'I, 0-1; San Jose State, 1-1; New Mexico State, 0-1).
- The Gophers improved their overall record to 5-3 against all-time members of the WAC.
- Minnesota's last game against a WAC opponent came against a team that is no longer in the league. The Gophers defeated Tulsa, 49-10, to open the 2003 season.
- Today's game is the first a two-game series with the New Mexico State. Both games will be played in Minneapolis, with the Aggies returning to TCF Bank Stadium in 2016.
TEAM NOTES
- With today's loss, Minnesota has now lost its last two home openers, falling to South Dakota, 41-38, last season.
- Minnesota's record now at TCF Bank Stadium is 6-10.
- Jerry Kill is the second consecutive Gopher head coach to lose in his home debut with the Golden Gophers.
- Today's 28-20 loss marks the Gophers' first 0-2 start to a season since Jim Wackler's first year in 1992.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
- Redshirt freshman Lamonte Edwards scored his first career touchdown to tie the game 7-7 on a 4-yard run with 4:29 remaining in the first quarter.
- Senior tight end Collin McGarry hauled in his first career touchdown reception just before halftime, catching a 10-yard strike from Marqueis Gray eight seconds before intermission. It was McGarry's third career reception. Both of his two previous catches came during 2010.
- Gray's 10-yard hook-up with McGarry was the junior signal-caller's second career touchdown pass and his first since throwing a 16-yard TD to Troy Stoudermire as a freshman at Ohio State in 2009.
- Gray's 16 completions for 211 yards and two touchdowns were all career highs for the junior.
- Senior wide receiver finished the game with a career-high nine receptions for a career-best 146 yards. It was the fourth 100-yard receiving game of his career.
- McKnight also hauled in his 12th career touchdown reception on a 4-yard pass from Gray.
- Troy Stoudermire snared his second career interception during the second quarter. It was his first pick since grabbing his first career interception at Illinois during the 2010 season.
- Stoudermire also took sole possession of the Big Ten's all-time kick return yardage record. With his 65 return yards today, Stoudermire now has 3,066 kickoff return yards for his Gopher career.
- Brock Vereen recorded his first career interception in the third quarter.
- Dan Orseske's 64-yard punt during the third quarter was a career-long. He averaged 46.0 yards on four punts for the game.
- Gray recorded his first career 100-yard rushing game on a career high 17 carries for 123 yards.
