The wind again came into play during the third and final round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge at Red Sky Golf Club. Despite the conditions, Jackie Shepherd was able to play solid golf throughout the week, and finished tied for 11th place. The Golden Gophers finished 16th as a team.
Shepherd shot a 77 (+5) in round one, and then led the team each of the next two days with a 73 yesterday and a 75 today. She led the field in par-4 scoring (+1), and tied for second in birdies (13). Shepherd's three-round score of 225 (+9) is 11 strokes lower than her score at last year's challenge, and ranks as her fourth-best career score in a three-round tournament.
Banchalee Theinthong recorded a final round score of 81 and finished tied for 49th. Aubrie Nelson tied for 66th and shot a 76 today. Carmen Laguna tied for 69th and posted a third-round 80. Sarinee Thitiratanakorn shot a 95 and finished tied for 87th. Minnesota's combined team score for the week was 938.
The team competition was unpredictable today, as seven squads at some point had the lead or a share of the lead. Oklahoma came out victorious with a score of 899. Chirapat Jao-Javanil (Oklahoma), who entered the round in third, took medalist honors with a total score of 217 (+1). Natalie Gleadall (Mississippi), Kristina Merkle (Tulsa), and Grace Na (Pepperdine) tied for second at 220.
Minnesota's next competition will be the Lady Northern in French Lick, Ind. It will be the Gophers' first two-day tournament (Oct. 10-11) of the season.
