Maroon Takes First Game in Steak 'N Beans Series

The Maroon team earned a 3-2 win to open the annual Steak 'N Beans series, Friday, Sept. 23 at Siebert Field.
Freshmen Jake Bergren and Tony Skjefte started their Gopher career on the right note, each getting hits in their first Gopher game. Bergren went 2-for-3, while Skjefte had a hit and two runs in three at bats. Matt Halloran knocked in two RBI, while Bobby Juan had another for the three runs. Ryan Abrahamson also had a double, a run and defensively had 13 put outs, while Kyle Geason had a hit in three at bats and four assists.
Ethan Liederman and Kurt Schlangen each had an RBI for the Gold Team, while seven had hits. Michael Handel, Dan Olinger, JT Canakes and Schlangen all had hits, while Matt Puhl and Trip Schultz each had a hit and a run. Olinger had six put outs, while Handel and Mark Tatera had three assists.
The winning pitcher was junior transfer Drew Ghelfi, who pitched two innings for the Maroon team and faced eight batters. He struck out one, walked one and allowed one run and three hits against eight batters. The Maroon team started with TJ Oakes as he pitched 2.2 innings and faced 10 batters. Oakes did not allow a run and struck out a batter. Dustin Klabunde also saw action and pitched 2.1 innings. He faced nine batters and allowed a run and two hits.
Austin Lubinsky started for the Gold Team and pitched 2.1 innings. He faced eight batters and did not allow a run and struck out one. Kevin Kray came into the game and pitched 1.2 and also faced eight batters. He allowed one unearned run and two hits, striking out one. Billy Soule completed the game for the Gold Team and had the loss. He allowed two earned runs on two hits and also struck out two.
