The Minnesota women's basketball team volunteered its time for the fifth-annual Women Run the Cities 10-mile run, 5k run/walk and one-mile run Sunday, which started and finished at Minnehaha Falls Park in Minneapolis, and members of the squad proved to be quite popular.

Head coach Pam Borton delivered a motivating pre-race speech to the 5K participants, before she and assistant coach Kelly Roysland took part in the race themselves. Members of the team cheered for their coaches and for all of the runners from the sidelines.

Numerous participants greeted Borton and the Golden Gophers after the event and made sure to let them know that their words and encouragement helped them complete the race and made the home stretch that much more enjoyable.

The Fast Break Club also worked a marketing table in the Vendor Village to promote the Gophers and provided FastBreak candy bars, fliers and had participants and their families register to win free tickets to a women's basketball game of their choice.

Proceeds from the event benefitted the Ann Bancroft Foundation, which honored Borton with the Ann Bancroft Dream Maker Award last spring.

The Ann Bancroft Foundation supports girls and women to realize their highest dreams and potential. The Foundation endeavors to live their mission by recognizing individual achievement and by promoting initiatives that inspire courage, risk-taking, integrity and individuality in girls and women.

The Women Run the Cities race allows women to network with other professionals during training, promote an active and healthy lifestyle and be a positive role model for young girls and women. The event features something for the experienced runner as well as the novice and allows participants to choose from a 10-mile run, 5k run/walk and 1-mile run for girls.
