Weekend Preview

This Weekend in Women's Cross Country

The University of Minnesota women's cross country team will split their squad in half this weekend for the first of two times this season. On Friday September 30 one group will be competing at the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invitational, which will be running at 6,000 meters. The other half of the Maroon and Gold will be traveling to South Dakota State to take part in the SDSU Classic, which will run at 5,000 meters.

Going to chase some Blugolds

Friday afternoon's race on the campus of UW-Eau Claire will consist of a 6,000-meter race for the Gophers. Last season Minnesota won the Invite with a team total of 30 points. Teams competing in 2011 will be from the Division III level.

Hunting for Jackrabbits

On Saturday morning, another group of Gophers will compete at the South Dakota State Invitational. There will be ten other teams competing at the SDSU Invite: host South Dakota State, Nebraska, Northern Iowa, North Dakota, Minnesota State Moorhead, Wayne State (Neb.), Minnesota Duluth, Mount Mary, Midland Lutheran and University of Sioux Falls. Last year, Minnesota finished in first with 24 team points.

Griak in the books

Last Saturday Minnesota finished in fifth place overall at the 26th Roy Griak Invitational. The Gophers were led by senior All-American Stephanie Price, who crossed the line in fifth place. Minnesota's fifth place finish was an improvement from last year when the squad finished in seventh.

Price honored again

Senior All-American Stephanie Price was named Big Ten Runner of the Week for the second time this season for her fifth place finish at the Roy Griak. This was the second time this season that Price has been given this accolade and fourth in her career.

Moving on up

The Maroon and Gold have moved up a total of nine spots this week in the national polls. Minnesota is currently ranked No. 21 in the nation after being ranked No. 30 since the start of 2011.
