Gold Team wins 2011 Intrasquad Meet

On a hot and muggy morning at Les Bolstad Golf Course, the Minnesota
Women's cross country team held their annual intrasquad meet. This
year the team was broken into three teams while each coach was
designated in charge for their team. The Gold team was coached by head
coach Gary Wilson who enters his 27th season at the helm. Assistant
coach Sarah Hesser (7th season) took charge of the Maroon team, while
first year volunteer assistant coach Nikki Swenson was the Black team
coach. The Gold team came out victorious this year after earning 29
points to the Maroon's 44 and Black's 56.
For the second straight year Stephanie Price (Gold) won the race after
covering the 5-kilomoter course in 17:27.42. The senior All-American
shattered her time from a year ago by 58 seconds to help her Gold
squad cruise to the victory.
Price was followed closely throughout the race by sophomore Missa
Varpness (Black) who finished with a time of 17:33.90. Her teammate
Ashlie Decker came in third after crossing the line at 18:32.14.
Laura Docherty (18:32.75) and Annie Talajkowski (18:42.34) of the Gold team rounded out the top five.
Overall the Gophers' looked very comfortable out there as they begin a
quest for a successful 2011 season. The coaches announced at the end
of the race that everyone who ran in this years intrasqaud posted a
faster time than a year ago.
A total of 49 runners competed today for the Gophers.
Things look to be very promising for this year's squad and we will
find out on Friday September 9, when Minnesota will host the 12th
annual Oz Memorial at 4:00 pm, at Les Bolstad Golf Course.
