No. 4 Minnesota opened the season with a 6-1 win over Union in Ridder Arena. Team captains Sarah Erickson and Jen Schoullis led the way for the Golden Gophers as Erickson tallied four points on the night while Schoullis had three points.

As head coach Brad Frost anticipated, Minnesota played all four lines tonight. Freshmen Rachel Ramsey, Rachael Bona, Meghan Lorence and Stephanie Anderson all played in the game.

The top line of Amanda Kessel, Jen Schoullis and Sarah Erickson scored four goals for the Gophers tonight. Kessel notched the first goal at 3:07 in the first, assisted by Erickson and Schoullis. Erickson tallied her first goal of the season with assists from Kessel and Schoullis with 9:13 left in the period. Minnesota went into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead.

Union came back from intermission and scored quickly, getting its first goal just two minutes into the second period on the power play with Minnesota's Erickson in the penalty box. Camille Corbin was credited with the goal, assisted by Elsa Bruestle to put bring the score to 2-1 in favor of the Gophers.

Minnesota responded quickly, scoring just two minutes later. Emily West tipped it in off a hard shot by Mira Jalosuo. Kelly Terry was also credited with an assist.

Schoullis got her first goal of the season with assists from Kessel and Erickson with 11:40 remaining in the second period. Schoullis was also credited with the Gophers' fifth goal, on the power play, with just under four minutes remaining in the period.

Both teams went scoreless for most of the final period, with Minnesota notching its final goal with just under three minutes remaining to put the Gophers up 6-1. Freshman Rachel Ramsey got her first goal as a Gopher, assisted by Sarah Davis and Kelly Terry.

Minnesota gave Union five power play chances in the game, but Minnesota killed four of five chances. Minnesota had three power play opportunities and converted on one.

Shots on goal weighed heavily in favor of the Gophers tonight, with 35 shots for Minnesota to just 15 for Union.

In the earlier East/West Showcase game, Syracuse defeated St. Cloud State 2-1.

The Gophers host two games at Ridder Arena again tomorrow, with St. Cloud State facing Union at 4 p.m. followed by Minnesota verses Syracuse at 7 p.m.
