Gophers Lead After Day 1 of Jack Johnson

Sophomore Stephanie Solfelt captured a title in the 5,000-meter run this afternoon and the Gophers lead the field with 58 points after the first day of the Jack Johnson Classic. South Dakota sits in second with 46 team points.
Solfelt, who is in her first season on the track & field team after previously being a member of the Gopher swimming & diving team, clocked in at 18:06.0 to win the race. Claire Rindo was second behind Solfelt with a time of 18:41.23 and Caitlin Olson was fifth at 19:51.07.
Minnesota had two top five finishes in the 200 meter dash with Chimerem Okoroji taking second (24.92) and Kelly Stalpes took fifth (25.69) for the Gophers.
The Gophers also placed to in the top five of the pole vault. Becca Pilkerton and Katie Murgic each cleared 3.65m (11-11 ¾) for third and fourth place.
Minnesota had two competing in the pentathlon at this year's classic. Jess Herauf and Nicole Murphey each represented the Maroon and Gold this afternoon. Herauf finished in second with 3,338 points and Murphey was third with 3,348 points. Herauf took first in the shot put with a mark of 11.8m (36-8 ¼) and Murphey won the long jump with a leap of 5.58m (18-3 ¾). Murphey also won the 800 meter run with a time of 22:27.74 and Hearuf came in second at 22:27:83.
Minnesota will be at it again tomorrow morning with the conclusion of the two-day event. Action gets underway at 10 a.m.
