Gophers Finish Third at Hoosier Fall Invitational

The University of Minnesota women's golf team continues to show improvement during the fall season. The Gophers will return to the Twin Cities following a third place finish over the weekend with a combined 54-hole score of 904 (301-295-308) at the Hoosier Fall Classic in Indiana.
The third place finish is the highest for Minnesota this season and the highest since the 2010-11 team finished third at the NCAA Regional.
Sophomore Carmen Laguna is a big reason for Minnesota's improvement. She fell just four strokes shy of taking home medalist honors with a three-day card of 217 (69-73-75) and stood alone in second place. Her card of 217 is a career-low, bettering the previous low by six strokes. Laguna has now tied, or set, a career low in back-to-back tournaments.
Fellow sophomore Sarinee Thitiratanakorn finished in a tie for ninth place, collecting the first top-10 finish of her collegiate career, with a 54-hole score of 225 (75-71-79). Senior Jackie Shepherd turned in the best performance of her final campaign, finishing alone in 18th with a 229 (78-73-78).
Anna Laorr carded a 76 on Sunday, her lowest score of the tournament, and moved up 10 spots in the process to finish in a tie for 26th place. Banchalee Theinthong finished in a tie for 49th place while Taylor Quinn, who played the event as an individual, finished in a tie for 65th.
The University of Wisconsin won the team title by two strokes over Indiana after one of the Hoosier players was disqualified for failure to sign her scorecard. Wisconsin's Lindsay Danielson took home medalist honors by four strokes over Laguna.
The Gophers will conclude their fall schedule Oct. 21-23 at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown. The entire tournament, played at the Boulder Creek Golf Club, can be followed live on www.golfstat.com.
